INDIA’S FIRST GLOBAL ROCKSTAR
By
Aditya Vivek
Composer-singer
Himesh Reshammiya’s first American tour, Aapka Suroor, is a resounding success and he is on cloud nine.
“Anything
I say will seem like self-projection. You have to be here in the US
to know what I’m experiencing. I can’t believe I connect so well with the crowd. This one-on-one with a live audience
has been the best experience of my career so far,” says Himesh.
His first of the
18-city concerts was in Atlanta.
Organiser Taneja
says, “I’ve been organizing Bollywood concerts for 15 years. I’ve never before seen such mass hysteria at
any Indian concert. We’ve started called Reshammiya the Music God. He generates a collective frenzy that I’ve
never seen before.”
Himesh even said
that he found the response of the American audience far beyond anything he had ever imagined. He even said that he was very
proud of what he had achieved, but what really made him proud was when people told him that he revived the music industry
and Bollywood concerts abroad.

THE
DELIGHTFUL DUO
SIMON
AND GARFUNKEL
By Dhruv Mehta
Simon and Garfunkel
are an American popular music duo comprising Paul Simon and Arthur ‘Art’
Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel were among the most popular recording artists of the 1960’s and are best known for their
songs ‘The Sound of Silence’ , ‘Mrs. Robinson’, and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. They
received several Grammys and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Early history:
Paul Simon and
Art Garfunkel grew up in Forest
Hills and were close friends from childhood. They began writing their own songs in 1957. ‘Hey Schoolgirl’
was one of them. The duo went to separate colleges. Simon went to Queens College and Garfunkel to Columbia
University.
In 1963 they gained
prominence as part of the same New York City folk music scene
as Bob Dylan. Simon also wrote some folk songs like ‘Sparrow’ and ‘Bleeker
Street’ The duo also broke up twice because of their own reasons.
My thoughts:
I wasn’t
a music fan to start off with, but my Mom loves music. Most everyday the radio is playing or her favourite album. It was then
that I began to enjoy music and started listening to it more seriously. My parents saw my interest and started exposing me
to different kinds of music. They made me hear the Beatles, and after that, ‘The Best of Simon and Garfunkel’.
I liked both of them very much. And now, I understood the difference between those days and today. Nowadays there is more
emphasis on the beat rather than the lyrics. This is what these two bands had which really got my attention.
I never really
understood the meanings of the songs until my parents explained them to me. Then I really started liking them. Even now, listening
to them when I am agitated calms me. I really recommend such songs to people of all ages. I feel it is a real delight to listen
to them.

SOME MORE COOL TRACKS - by Dhruv Mehta
- Boulevard Brokendreams by Green Day. A good good song with
good lyrics and almost everything good ! It's not like those regular songs. That's what makes it popular.
- Have a Nice Day by Bon Jovi: An adrenalin pumping song with
Bon Jovi at his best. If you are feeling glum, this is the best song to get you up and jumping.
- Don't Lie by Black Eyed Peas: This is one of the songs from
the new album of the Black Eyed Peas. If you hear the lyrics, you'll understand that you should not lie. This song became
a popular hit almost everywhere.
- Woh Lamhe by Anu Malik: The song from the movie Zeher. Everybody
loves it and it has topped the charts all over India. Sometimes you hear people humming
this song to themselves.
- Angels by Robbie Williams: This is Robbie Williams at his best.
You'll never find him better. A wonderful song and nice lyrics. My personal favourite.
A review of some
of the coolest tracks:
By Dhruv Mehta
- ROCK DA PARTY by Bombay Rockers: Quite a cool song. The music
is good and it is a good blend of English and Punjabi. It is one of those groovy songs. Check it out.
- SUMMER OF 69 by Bryan Adams: This song rocks. One of Bryan Adams’ best. The music also rocks. The lyrics
are also very good. It’s an adrenalin-building song which will always cheer you up.
- FEEL by Robbie Williams: This song has got a nostalgic tune and feel to it. The lyrics are also quite nice,
but sad. I personally like the song and I am also a Robbie Williams fan. So if you’re in the mood for a quieter song,
this is for you.
- INCOMPLETE by Backstreet Boys: Though the song signifies grief, it is sung wonderfully. The song, the music,
the lyrics: everything rocks. I think it is a must-hear song.
- ONE LOVE by Blue: This is the kind of song which is quite rare, in terms of the tune and the music, which are
unique – and they are what makes the song unique too. People go bonkers over the song the world over. And guys –
did you know it has a Hindi translation as well?
