The
Arctic ice is melting faster than ever before endangering
us, yes, I did type, endangering with all the highlighting.
This is a new & alarming trend that researchers are following.
The
melting of the winter ice in the Arctic does prove that
it is due to the Greenhouse effect.
They
have waited long enough for this suspense to end because they had expected the melting of winter ice. For the last 25 years
the Arctic sea ice has slowly diminished by 1.5% per decade, but, in the last 2 years the ice is melting at rates 10-15 times
faster.
Another
NASA study shows that at a certain region in the eastern Arctic the ice has melted by 40& over the past 2 yrs.
This
loss of ice is really, very bad news for the ocean because it is during the period when the summer ice melts that plankton
breed.
The
ice is melting even in the sub-freezing winter temperatures
because the water is warmer & life of summer ice is short &
also covers less area.
Thus
the winter ice also season shortens its life every year & warmer water melts at the edges of the ice, with increasing
intensity, every year.
The
world now has a 10 year gap to take a decision between living & dying & to take action on global warming to avert
a weather catastrophe.
Governments
must adopt to a scenario to check on CO2 emission & limit the
growth of global warming to only 1oC. A NASA scientist has said that we as humans have a very little time to deal
with this window of opportunity to deal with climate change ……… 10 yrs at the most.
If
the world continues to use this “business like usual” scenario like we are doing now than the temperatures will
rise by 2-3oC per year & we will be producing a different planet.
On
that warmer planet, ice sheets would melt quickly, causing a rise in sea levels that could put Manhattan, New York,
for some of those who don’t understand, underwater.
The
planet will suffer prolonged draughts & heat waves, powerful hurricanes in unexpected places & extinction of nearly
50% of the species present on the Earth, today.
Saturn is growing!!!!!!!!!!
Saturn's majestic ring system has just gotten a little
more crowded with the discovery of a faint, new ring encircling the giant planet.
The international
Cassini spacecraft beamed back images this week showing the new ring, located inside the outermost ring.
The new ring
crosses the orbits of the Saturn moons Janus and Epimetheus, leading scientists to believe tiny particles from the lunar surfaces
gave rise to the ring.
Scientists
are interested in Saturn's rings because they are a model of the disk of gas and dust that initially surrounded the sun. Studying
them could yield important clues about how the planets formed from that disk four-point-five (b) billion years ago.
WHAT A PLANET REALLY IS???
A celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome
rigid body forces so that it assumes a nearly round shape & has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit is called a
planet.
This is the new definition of a planet.
Thus Pluto does not come under the term
as a planet, as it wanders into the orbit of Neptune for 20 years twice in its revolution around the sun
Thus it will be put under the new category
of “dwarf planets” along with the
asteroid Ceres, the largest asteroid & the newly discovered 2003 UB313, NOW NAMED Xena.
What is a Planemo, now ?????????????

Planemos are too small to be stars and are bigger than most planets. A handful of hot
young carefree floating objects have enough raw materials to make their own planetary systems.
Planemos is a short form of planetary mass objects.
Exactly like some young stars, these planemos have disks of cosmic dust and gas which circle
around them. These are the X – ingredients needed to form planets, like the Earth and our solar system which came into
being as a result of these ingredients coming together.
Planemos are not planets because they do not orbit other stars.
The researchers and astromomers have detected 4 such planemos which are just a few million years od and are
present at a distance of 450 light years from the Earth.
One light year is the distance traveled by light in one year. Light travels at the speed
of 300,000 km per second and so in one year it travels 9,500,000,000,000 or 9.5 trillion km.
Scientists have also found a disk-skirted planemo interacting with a brown dwarf, or a
failed star, at about 170 million light years away.
The planemo was expected to orbit the star , but instead they orbit each other.
They have a mass 100 times the mass of Jupiter, are less massive than our Sun, even though
they are in their infant stage.
As a matter of fact, when Jupiter was young, even it had many discs which are now formed into satellites, and
a few of these discs still remain.
Earth’s satellite, the Moon, was probably formed when our world collided with another
planet, while Mars’ satellites are asteroids captured by its gravity.
If planetary bodies form around the planemo, they would most probably be inhospitable to
life unless it was formed very near them. Even if a planet was formed it would only temporarily be warm enough for liquid
water to exist and would eventually be frozen for eternity.

minimum 35 countries have gone into space.
NASA has decided that it will send
humans back onto the Moon. The space ship should be ready for tests by 2012 & manned flights will take place from 2014
NASA plans to scrap its aging shuttles
which have gone through 2 tragic disasters including the Colombia disaster in 2003 in Texas.
They plan to retire the fleet
by 2010 & replace it with a Crew Exploration Vehicle which will take astronauts back onto the Moon by 2020.
THE TROPICAL BELT
Scientists from Washington
are claiming that the tropical belts on the earth are getting wider & if this continues it will cause droughts.
These scientists analyzed satellite
images from 1979 to 2005 & have estimated that the tropical regions have increased by 2 degrees or 225 km. If this continues
then dry areas such as the Sahara Desert
could nudge upwards to the pole. The scientists aren’t sure how this phenomenon has occurred.
Researchers claim that this could have occurred due to global warming
& the depletion of ozone gases from the Mesosphere due to pollutants from fridges, etc.
